This is the official University of Toronto Equestrian (UTEQ) website. We are a tri-campus wide student group whose purpose is to bring students with a love for horses and the sport together. Membership is open to any interested student studying at either one of the St.George, Mississauga, or Scarborough campuses and includes both recreational and competitive opportunities. We have formed our pillars on teamwork and cooperation, and we pride ourselves in keeping this up!

One way to get involved is to join our U of T Equestrian competition team. UTEQ offers competitive riding in association with the Ontario Collegiate Equestrian Association (OCEA). The UTEQ team hosts its own OCEA affiliated shows, clinics, information sessions, socials and team building events. The team practices at Well Dressed Equestrian, our home barn. We have tryouts in the beginning of the year so if you are interested in joining our competitive team, scroll down to check the Team page for more information!

In addition to offering students the opportunity to ride competitively, you can also join our U of T Equestrian club, a social group in which you can connect with other like minded students and attend fun events! If you are a beginner this would be a great way to get involved as we provide discounted riding lessons at Toronto Equestrian Downtown (formerly known as The Horse Palace). Alternatively, if you are not interested in competitive riding but would like to continue riding while at university, this is the perfect club for you!

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO

EQUESTRIAN COMPETITION TEAM

The University of Toronto Equestrian team competes on the Ontario Collegiate Equestrian Association (OCEA) circuit. U of T is one of six central zone schools who compete against one another in equitation style classes. Check the OCEA website to see the universities and colleges we compete against! Riders compete in Under Saddle (US) and Over Fences (OF) classes at each show. There are four divisions you can compete in:  Entry (18"), Novice (2'3"), Intermediate (2'6") and Open (3'0").

OCEA Competitions are slightly different to what you might be familiar with! Riders are assigned to a horse they have not ridden before and are tested on their ability to adapt to their new mounts without an allotted time for a warmup.

If you are interested in joining the team, we have tryouts at the beginning of the academic year, check this page for updates closer to the date!

There are certain qualifications you have to meet before you can compete in a certain division, to get the details visit the Ontario Collegiate Equestrian Association website or email our UTEQ Team email.

  • How much experience is needed for joining the club?

No experience is necessary to join the club. Our social events require little to no experience because they are all about fun. Our UTEQ Club is all about meeting new friends and socializing at recreational events. The lessons we offer with our partnered stables are meant for any and all experience levels. Only the UTEQ Team requires previous experience.

  • Can I take riding lessons with University of Toronto Equestrian?

Of course! We currently offer discounted lessons (for all levels) at Toronto Equestrian Downtown (formerly known as The Horse Palace). We are also working on finding partner stables closer to the Mississauga and Scarborough campuses to accommodate all riders.

  • Do I need my own horse to compete with UTEQ Team?

No - team riders catch ride at shows meaning they compete on donated horses they have never ridden before. You do not need your own horse for the lesson programs either!

  • What do the Ontario Collegiate Equestrian Association competitions include?

The OCEA offers hunter equitation classes to riders ranging in abilities. Riders compete in two classes, Under Saddle and Over Fences.

For all lessons, you will need an ASTM approved riding helmet, boots with a heel and you may ride in breeches or loose jeans. Bring your health card to the first lesson as well.
